Picha Marangi was on assignment in Turkana when he met Elizabeth Korikel and quickly bonded over their shared love for bold colour and statement pieces. Their collaboration became The Flyest Wedding in Africa, a fictional art project and the first instalment of The Artists Xchange, a year-long initiative uniting artists from Turkana, Karamoja, Kampala, and Nairobi to respond to issues in the Ateker region. The project is set within a region of striking natural beauty, from Lake Turkana, the world’s largest desert lake, to the dramatic mountains of Karamoja. The Artists Xchange creates space for artists to engage with these shifts, highlighting the need for communities to be recognised as equal partners and custodians of cultural heritage.
