Is this the flyest wedding in Africa? When stylist and photographer Picha Marangi met Elizabeth Korikel in Turkana, he found a creative kindred spirit, and together they imagined a bold, fictional wedding that celebrated their shared artistic vision. The project blends Elizabeth Korikel’s beading and cultural influences with Picha Marangi’s reworked thrift fashion, resulting in striking, colour-rich looks that reflect both Turkana and Kibera. Picha Marangi, also known as Stephen Okoth, is a photographer and stylist from Kibera, widely recognised for his vibrant aesthetic and for challenging stereotypes about the community through fashion. His work gained wider acclaim after a fashion film about him, directed by Nathan Collett, won Best Fashion Film at the Bokeh Fashion Film Festival. The collaboration emerged from an artists’ exchange programme linked to the film Turkana by Jackie Lebo, which documents the region’s shifting dynamics following oil discoveries. Supported by the Doen Foundation and the British Council, the project brings together fashion, storytelling, and social commentary to reimagine identity and place.
