In early 2018, Picha Marangi, a photographer and stylist from Kibera, travelled to Turkana on assignment where he met Elizabeth Korikel, a translator, beading artist, and singer. Drawn together by their shared love for bold colour and statement pieces, their love and creative connection inspired a fictional wedding narrative expressed through vibrant, collaborative designs. The looks combined Elizabeth Korikel’s intricate beadwork with Picha Marangi’s reimagined thrifted clothing, forming the basis of The Flyest Wedding in Africa, a sartorial art project. As the first project from The Artists Xchange, a year-long initiative uniting artists from Turkana, Karamoja, Kampala, and Nairobi, it responds to issues affecting the Ateker region in both direct and abstract ways. The Artists Xchange is a companion to the feature documentary Turkana: Races for Resources, linking artistic expression with broader regional narratives with the participating artists working across disciplines including film, fashion, music, and visual art.
